New York Yankees Baseball
It’s the eve of the Yankee – Angels’ series and having just watched the excitement (maybe not) of the Philly and Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) I can’t wait for October 16, 2009 7:57 p.m. Why? Because it is the first time in five years that the New York Yankees have made it to an American League Championship Series (ALCS). Does it seem like it to you? It was 2004 against the Boston Red Sox, a series the Yankees lost in seven games. I’m sorry I meant to say that the Red Sox woo, wooooo, won. There I got that out.
Maybe it is a case of the wild card diluting the World Series excitement over the years. As Peter contemplates about it at Still America’s Pastime, I might have to agree that it does. You see from 2005 to 2007 the New York Yankees participated in each year’s American League Division Series (ALDS), including in 2007 as the wild card no less. So, it is easy to lose the fact that the Yankees have actually made it this far after five years (don’t throw rotten fruit at me).
While I will not review my personal struggles with the changes in baseball over the decades, I will reminisce on the fact that baseball knew better times. I certainly cherished the Championship Series in each league more then, than I do now. Then again, there may be many out there that reflect on the days prior to the first Championship Series in 1969.
It doesn’t matter though. Baseball may have its broken days, but none of them fall in October.
